Quick answer: Animation is about creating characters, worlds and movement from scratch, for animated films, games, ads and social media. VFX (visual effects) is about blending computer-generated elements into real camera footage, for films, web series and commercials, such as explosions, digital crowds or a new sky. Choose animation if you love characters and storytelling; choose VFX if you love making the impossible look real. If you can’t decide, a combined program lets you learn both and choose later.
What is animation?
Animation is the art of bringing characters, objects and worlds to life through movement. Everything on screen is created by artists, usually in 3D software today, although 2D animation is still widely used in TV, ads and social media content.
Animators work on animated films and series, video games, advertisements, explainer videos, e-learning content and social media. The core skill is making movement believable and full of personality: how a character walks, reacts and expresses emotion.
What is VFX?
VFX (visual effects) is the process of adding or changing elements in live-action footage after it has been shot. When you see a superhero flying over a city, a building collapsing or a crowd of thousands in a historical film, that is usually VFX.
VFX artists work on films, OTT web series, TV shows and commercials. The core skill is realism: matching light, colour, shadows and camera movement so that computer-generated elements look like they were really filmed.

What does an animator do day to day?
A typical day might involve animating a character’s walk cycle, adding facial expressions to a dialogue scene, or refining a shot based on feedback from a lead animator. Depending on the role, you might also build 3D models, paint textures or set up the “skeleton” (rig) that lets a character move.
Animation rewards patience and observation. Good animators study how people and animals move in real life and translate that into convincing motion.
What does a VFX artist do day to day?
A typical day in VFX might involve removing wires or rigs from a stunt shot (paint), cutting an actor out of the background frame by frame (rotoscoping), tracking camera movement (matchmove), or combining all the layers into one final, seamless image (compositing). Senior FX artists create simulations like fire, smoke, water and destruction.
VFX rewards precision. You’ll spend a lot of time on small details that, when done well, the audience never notices.
Which pays more: animation or VFX?
At fresher level, the difference is small and depends mostly on your portfolio, your specialisation and the studio that hires you. Over time, both paths can grow well. Specialised technical VFX roles such as FX artists and senior compositors can earn more at senior levels, while animators who move into game studios or lead roles also see strong growth.
Rather than choosing based on salary alone, choose the work you’ll enjoy doing every day. Skill and consistency are what drive salary growth in both fields.
Which is easier to learn?
Neither is “easy”. They are difficult in different ways. Animation demands an eye for movement, timing and acting. VFX demands technical accuracy and patience with detail. Neither requires you to be good at drawing to start, and both are taught from the basics in a good program.
Choose animation if…
- You love cartoons, animated films or video game characters
- You enjoy storytelling, acting and expression
- You like creating things entirely from your imagination
- You want options across films, games, advertising and social media
Choose VFX if…
- You love films and web series, and wonder how big scenes were made
- You enjoy technical problem-solving and fine detail
- Realism excites you more than stylised characters
- You want a faster route into film and OTT post-production
Can’t decide? You don’t have to choose yet
Many students don’t know which they’ll enjoy more until they’ve tried both. That’s why combined programs exist: you learn the foundations of animation and VFX together, and specialise once you know where your strengths lie.

Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between animation and VFX?
Animation creates characters and worlds entirely from scratch. VFX adds computer-generated elements to real camera footage and makes them look real.
Is VFX harder than animation?
Neither is harder overall. Animation is challenging in movement, timing and acting, while VFX is challenging in technical precision and realism. Which feels easier depends on your natural strengths.
Which has more jobs, animation or VFX?
Both have steady demand. Animation work spans films, games, ads, e-learning and social media, while VFX work is concentrated in films, OTT web series and commercials. Many studios hire for both.
Can I learn both animation and VFX?
Yes. Combined programs like the Advanced Program in Animation & VFX and Trinity AVG teach both, so you can specialise later.
Do I need drawing skills for animation or VFX?
No. Drawing helps in 2D animation and character design, but most 3D animation and VFX roles rely on software skills, observation and practice, which are taught from the basics.
